Alpine Junk Removal crew member at the trailer with a pile of household items ready to load

When the truck pulls away from your house, most people don’t think much about where the stuff goes next. It’s out of the garage, and that’s what matters. But it’s a fair question, and we think you should know the answer.

At Alpine Junk Removal, every load gets sorted. We donate and recycle whatever we can. Here’s what that means and how you can help.

Why Sorting Matters

A load of junk is rarely all junk. A typical garage or basement cleanout is a mix of things: a dresser that still has years left in it, a pile of cardboard boxes, some scrap metal, a broken chair, and a few bags of true trash. If all of that gets treated the same way, a lot of usable material goes to waste.

Sorting is how we separate the things that can have a second life from the things that can’t. It takes more effort than dumping a load as-is, and we do it on every load.

What Sorting Looks Like

Sorting isn’t complicated. It’s mostly paying attention to what’s in the load and setting things aside by where they’re headed:

  • Items that can be donated. Furniture, household goods, and other things that are still in usable shape.
  • Material that can be recycled. Things like metal and cardboard are common examples of material that can often be recycled.
  • What’s left. Anything that can’t be donated or recycled is disposed of properly.

We donate and recycle whatever we can. Not everything qualifies. Condition matters, and some items simply don’t have anywhere else to go. We’d rather be straight with you about that than promise something we can’t back up.

What You Can Do to Help

You don’t have to sort anything before we come. If you want your usable items to go further, a few small steps help:

  • Keep usable items dry. A couch that’s been sitting in the rain or a box of books in a damp basement is much harder to donate.
  • Keep sets together. Table and chairs, bed frame and hardware, a dresser and its drawers. Complete items are more useful to the next person.
  • Point out the good stuff. When you text us photos, let us know which items still work or are in good shape.
  • Set aside anything hazardous. Paint, chemicals, propane tanks, and similar items need their own handling. Mention them when you text so we can talk about it before we come.

Things You Can Handle Yourself

If you’re doing some of the work on your own, Longmont has some useful resources for homeowners:

  • Curbside recycling is included with city trash service. The city’s Waste Wizard tool lets you look up how to dispose of a specific item.
  • The Longmont Recycling Center on Martin Street has drop-off bins and takes some additional materials during business hours. Check the city’s site for current details.
  • Old TVs can’t go in your curbside trash in Longmont. The city’s Waste Services pages list options for hard-to-recycle items.
  • Paperwork can go to the city’s free document shredding events on Saturday, Nov. 7 and Saturday, Dec. 5, at 1801 Boston Ave. Confirm details on the city’s site before you go.

For the bigger stuff, like furniture, appliances, a full garage, or a room’s worth of belongings, that’s where we come in.
